Labour devolution report is dampest of squibs

Gordon Brown’s latest devolution plan is “the dampest of squibs” according to the Scottish Greens, who have accused Labour of hostility to Scottish democracy and ‘downright arrogance’.

The Scottish Greens finance spokesperson, Ross Greer MSP said:

“This report is the dampest of squibs. It offers little in the way of change and only goes to show how downright arrogant the Labour Party has become and how hostile it is to the people of Scotland deciding our own future.

“Gordon Brown has rightly concluded that Westminster isn’t working, something many of us realised a long time ago. It is however frankly stunning to have come to that judgement, only to then deny the people of Scotland a choice on whether or not we remain tied to that failed Westminster system.

“It is the height of arrogance for Labour to argue that voters should be given a choice on their own constitutional reforms at the next General Election whilst simultaneously denying the mandate the Greens and SNP have to declare that every vote for our parties will be a vote for independence.

“After all, our parties combined won more seats and votes on pro-independence platforms at last year's Scottish Parliament election than the anti-democracy alliance of Tories, Labour and Liberal Democrats.

“After 12 years of Tory economic vandalism and cuts to public services, none of which Scotland voted for, and after a disastrous Brexit that Labour now supports, it is clear that we need the powers of independence if we are to deliver the change that is so badly needed.

"Scotland deserves so much better than relying on voters in England to endorse a bland, Starmer-led UK Government.

“Only with independence can we rejoin the EU, remove nuclear weapons from our shores and bring in the green industrial revolution that our climate and communities are crying out for.”
