Huge public support for windfall tax on energy co profits

Westminster must slap a windfall tax on the massive profits of energy companies to help reduce soaring household energy bills, Scottish Greens finance spokesperson Ross Greer MSP said today.

Pointing to a new opinion poll carried out by Survation, which shows that almost three quarters of Scots would back such a tax, Mr Greer said there was no excuse for further delay.

Ross Greer said:

“The UK Government’s response to soaring household energy bills has been utterly inadequate.

“Rising bills are putting households under huge pressure, and the knock on impacts of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine mean that gas prices in particular will continue to soar.

“Many families face costs they simply cannot afford. Introducing a windfall tax on the billions of pounds in profits made by the big energy companies is a hugely popular measure, and it would collect the money needed to help households pay for their fuel bills.

“At a time when people are being overwhelmed by rising costs, Boris Johnson’s reluctance to tax the obscene greed of energy giants is completely immoral.”
