HMRC CLOSURES: WILSON URGES SUPPORT FOR WORKERS AND TRADE UNIONS

John Wilson MSP, the Scottish Greens’ employment spokesperson, today raised concerns over the potential closure of HMRC offices across Scotland.

Mr Wilson has submitted a motion to the Scottish Parliament calling for the Scottish Government to use all its influence to prevent further significant job losses.

HMRC staff at offices in Aberdeen, Bathgate, Cumbernauld, Dundee, East Kilbride, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Livingston are affected.

John Wilson, Independent MSP for Central Scotland, said:

“It is disappointing to hear of these potential job losses. Closing these offices will have a significant detrimental effect on local communities.

“I call on HMRC to abandon these plans that if implemented could result in over 2000 jobs lost across Scotland, and force those workers who are not made redundant to travel substantial distances to new sites. We must ensure that we support the workforce and their Trade Unions in the fight to keep these sites open and avoid devastating job losses.

“I hope the Scottish Government will use any influence it can bring to bear to support the workforce and communities affected.”
