Healey resignation shows Starmer must go

Kier Starmer's position is untenable.

Patrick Harvie MSP has said that John Healey’s resignation shows that Keir Starmer’s government is “falling apart in real time” and that the Prime Minister must go.

The Scottish Green MSP said that Healey’s departure was the latest sign of a chaotic and divided Labour government that has lost its authority.

Scottish Greens Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Transport and Tourism Patrick Harvie MSP said:

“Keir Starmer’s government is falling apart in real time. John Healey has been widely regarded as a loyalist, but has clearly concluded that he can no longer serve Keir Starmer as Prime Minister.

“Whether it is the failure to stand up for international law, the refusal to take serious climate action, the shameful assault on minorities like migrants, disabled people and the LGBTQ+ community, or now open division at the heart of government, the pattern is clear. Keir Starmer has lost control."

Patrick added:

“Clearly, the Greens do not share John Healey’s military priorities. We need a government that recognises modern threats to our security like the rise of the far right, and the collapse of climate and nature. We face many threats, but our country’s safety won’t be helped by letting public services continue to crumble while arms companies profit.

“But when a Defence Secretary feels he has no option but to resign, it tells us something fundamental about the failure of the Prime Minister to keep a coherent Government together.

“Keir Starmer promised stability and competence. Instead he has delivered chaos, cruelty and broken promises. The Labour Party must stop clinging to a failed leader. Keir Starmer must go.”
