Greer congratulates Kilwinning Academy Credit Union

Green MSP Ross Greer has put forward a Parliamentary motion to recognise Kilwinning Academy’s accomplishment in forming the first ever credit union within a school, in partnership with 1st Alliance Ayrshire Credit Union.

The motion notes that the credit union was created with help from the Innovative Schools Project, a partnership between Developing Young Workforce (DYW) Ayrshire and the Prince’s Trust Scotland with the new credit union at Kilwinning Academy being their 60th funded partnership project. This project encourages pupils to get involved in entrepreneurial activities, which will help develop their employability skills.

The motion calls on the government to highlight the value of what is being accomplished at Kilwinning Academy, created as a response to the closure of the town’s high street banks.

Ross Greer MSP said:

“Credit unions are essential for a growing number of people, especially with high street bank branches closing quickly across the country. What the pupils at staff at Kilwinning Academy have done is fantastic and should be recognised nationally. I hope this paves the way for similar school-based credit union to be set up across Scotland. We need to give young people the financial and employability skills they need for their working lives but just as importantly, we need to give them a safe and ethical place to put their money. Credit unions are a brilliant way to do that.”
