Greens welcome Langholm community reaching target

Responding to reports that the Langholm Moor community buyout funding has been secured to buy 5,000 acres from the Duke of Bucceuch, Scottish Greens lead candidate for the South of Scotland Laura Moodie said:

"This is a welcome development for the whole of the South of Scotland, and hopefully means barren grouse moors will now put into more productive use like small-scale renewables, creating a nature reserve and building good quality homes.

"It is disappointing however that the Duke of Buccleuch has held out for such a high price for the larger area. The process of community acquisition of land cannot simply be reliant on the public raising millions to be handed over into private hands. That's why the Scottish Greens want to strengthen the rights of community buyouts in future."
