Greens overtake Lib Dems - Holyrood poll

For immediate release 29 March 2011

The Scottish Greens are polling ahead of the Lib Dems for the first time ever, according to the results of a YouGov opinion poll conducted for the Scotsman newspaper.

Patrick Harvie, co-convenor of the Scottish Greens, said:

"At the heart of the Green campaign is a pledge to protect public services through fairer taxation, and this election is becoming a clear referendum on the unpopular cuts agenda being driven by the Tories and the Lib Dems. From nuclear power and VAT hikes to tuition fees and fair votes, the list of pledges broken by Tavish's party goes on and on.

"Whoever becomes First Minister, the question is this: who should hold the balance of power? There are only two choices - either it'll be one of the Westminster coalition parties, or it'll be the Greens. Scots have always trusted us on the environment, but increasingly we're winning support for our positive proposals on the economy and on public services."

The YouGov poll for the Scotsman newspaper was conducted between 25-28 March, among 1,025 Scottish adults.
