Greens challenge climate inaction following Scottish Government report

Responding to Scotland’s Climate Change Plan: 2026–2040, the Scottish Greens have challenged the inaction of the Scottish Government on tackling the climate emergency.
The Greens have highlighted the backward steps that have taken place, particularly since John Swinney took office and urged the Government to reconsider its commitment to unproven technologies like carbon capture and to take the bold action that is needed.
Scottish Greens Net Zero spokesperson, Patrick Harvie MSP said:
“It's extraordinary that the Scottish Government has made no meaningful change to any actual climate policy, after the draft plan was widely dismissed as lacklustre.
“A few tweaks to monitoring, evaluation and technical methodologies will do nothing to actually cut emissions.
“Better communication to combat the growing threat of climate denial propaganda is certainly needed, but it's no substitute for the actions needed to cut emissions and help people cut their energy and transport costs at the same time.
“Since John Swinney became First Minister he has thrown several major areas of climate policy into reverse, and this final Climate Plan shows that he has no intention of restoring Scotland's reputation as a climate leader.
“Over the coming weeks, the Scottish Greens will continue setting out clear plans to accelerate the shift to net zero, and to show that the actions needed will be good for our society, our economy, our household budgets and our national security.”
