Greens call for royal visit to US to be cancelled

Time to halt the royal visit.
A sign reads Humanity Against Trump

The Scottish Greens external affairs spokesperson, Patrick Harvie, has urged the UK government to cancel the upcoming royal visit to the US.

In response to a prior Topical Question the Deputy First Minister was entirely focused on the issue of Scottish export interests, ignoring the wider threat posed by Trump.

Challenging Ms Forbes on this, Patrick said:

“This goes far beyond export interests.

"The latest economic threat from Trump follows on from his attacks on the sovereignty of Greenland, his unilateral military action against Venezuela, his support for genocide in Palestine, his attempts to wreck international climate efforts, and the brutal violence of his regime against his own citizens.

“Surely it's clear that democratic countries cannot continue to treat this lawless US President as a security partner.

“Does the Scottish Government agree that in this context a formal visit by the UK's Head of State would only feed Trump's ego and would continue a failed policy of appeasement against this extremist, and that the visit must be cancelled?”
