Greens call for Douglas Ross to disown incompetent Tory Chancellor
Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross must tell the public if UK Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng still has the support of Conservative MSPs at Holyrood.
Finance spokesman Ross Greer said the Scottish Tories had a moral obligation to share their position with the electorate given the seriousness of the economic crisis.
It comes as Prime Minister Liz Truss spent the morning trying in vain to defend her Chancellor’s mini budget, which forced the Bank of England to intervene to prevent a run on pension funds and to protect the wider economy.
Mr Greer said:
“Given the impacts on Scotland’s finances of this disastrous ‘mini-budget’, the Scottish Tories must tell the public where they stand. Does the Chancellor still have their support despite the monumental damage he is causing?
“Tory MSPs have a moral obligation to explain their position to those who’ve suddenly found themselves unable to get a mortgage and those whose mortgage costs are about to skyrocket, to the businesses unable to access funding and to people unable to heat their homes this winter.
“Kwasi Kwarteng may very well go down as the worst Chancellor in modern history. With the pound collapsing and the UK becoming an economic pariah state, Douglas Ross needs to either be honest about the fact that he supports him, or call on his Prime Minister to sack him.”
