Glasgow Greens unveil Seonad Hoy as candidate in Hillhead by-election
Seonad Hoy will contest the Hillhead by-election for the Scottish Greens, the party has announced.
An experienced campaigner with a background in the third sector and social housing, Ms Hoy has a strong understanding of housing and homelessness legislation and would be a key asset for the Council as Glasgow tackles an ongoing housing emergency.
Seonad has been heavily involved with the party in recent years, having served as co-convenor of the Glasgow Greens since 2022 and for two years as the branch’s secretary before that.
On a local level, Seonad was a key part of the re-election campaign for long-standing Hillhead Councillor Martha Wardrop.
Having lived in Hillhead for 20 years, Seonad has an appreciation for local priorities and will work to strengthen the rights of residents, community organisations and small businesses.
She will now fight to double the party’s representation in the ward when a new councillor is elected on Thursday, March 7, 2024.
Seonad Hoy, Scottish Green Party candidate for Hillhead, said:
"We are living through a climate and nature emergency. Scottish Greens are the only party which is prioritising tackling these emergencies, implementing policies to reduce carbon emissions and improve biodiversity.
As councillor for Hillhead, I would build on the achievements of our current councillor Martha Wardrop, prioritising local climate action and working collaboratively to tackle Glasgow’s housing crisis. Let's make history by electing another Green in Hillhead, for people and planet."
Councillor Wardrop’s dedicated work led to the Greens finishing in first place in the Hillhead ward in 2022’s local elections.
Martha garnered more than a third of the vote (36.2%), 7.5% ahead of the SNP, and a massive 14% ahead of the Labour Party.
Seonad intends to continue and build upon Councillor Wardrop’s fantastic work over the past 17 years.
Glasgow Greens’ Hillhead Councillor, Martha Wardrop, said:
“Electing Green councillors is vital to pushing for more action to combat climate change, and advocating for public services that help to reduce inequality.
Greens are supporting investment on creating jobs for the future, promoting the local high street and providing additional financial support for those on the lowest incomes.”
Scottish Green Party co-leader and Glasgow MSP, Patrick Harvie, added:
“Green policies are making a real difference for people in Hillhead and across Scotland - from protecting tenants from big rent rises, to investing in the energy efficiency of our tenements to cut bills and carbon emissions.
But we need more Green councillors in the City Chambers too, if we’re going to get the most out of these policies locally. Seonad would make a fantastic new councillor for Hillhead.”
