Scottish Greens Environment spokesperson Mark Ruskell MSP this afternoon (14 March) challenged the First Minister on fox hunting, following the publication of horrific footage posted online over the weekend. [1]

Mr Ruskell asked the First Minister whether, in light of the footage, she felt it was ever acceptable to hunt foxes with dogs. The First Minister failed to respond directly to the question.

Mark Ruskell MSP said:

“Quite frankly, this footage is disgusting. It is disgraceful that this practice continues in 2019 when Parliament was meant to have banned it two decades ago. The Scottish Government’s current proposals do not go far enough, so I hope they will work with us to bring forward robust and effective legislation that ends this barbaric practice once and for all.

“My colleague, Alison Johnstone, has been working on this for some time and I look forward to continuing to support her efforts to finally bring an end to fox hunting in Scotland.”

Urgent call for renewable heating to tackle climate emergency

Mon 12 Aug, 2019

The Scottish Greens have called for urgent action to transform the way Scottish homes are heated amid the climate emergency.

With most buildings in Scotland - including the majority of new houses - relying on fossil fuels to keep warm, Scottish Green energy spokesperson Mark Ruskell has written to Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse calling for action.

Heat accounts for half of Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions from energy use and a failure to act swiftly would not meet the challenge of the climate emergency. Targets on heat in the 2009 Climate Bill have not been met.

Thursday’s announcement in Methil breathed a new air of optimism into the whole of Levenmouth and East Fife. In an area still impacted by post-industrial decline – and on the back of yet more disappointment for the BiFab yard recently – the news of a £70m investment into reopening a rail link to Edinburgh and the rest of Fife could not be more welcome.
