FMQs: First Minister must commit to increasing Scottish Child Payment
Scottish Greens MSP for Glasgow Southside and Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice Holly Bruce is calling on the First Minister to take positive action to eradicate child poverty by increasing the Scottish Child Payment to £55 per week by the end of this seesion of Parliament.
Currently, families eligible for the Scottish Child Payment receive £28.20 per week. As part of the Scottish Greens manifesto commitment, the party have called for an initial increase for £40 per week, with the goal of increasing this further to £55 before 2031.
Speaking at First Minister’s Questions today, Holly said:
“Today, children, children’s charities and anti-poverty organisations have come to their Parliament to tell us what poverty and debt means for them
They’re asking us to act faster and go further.“Can the First Minister say how he will, in his words, “eradicate child poverty” this Parliamentary session?
“Will he commit to putting more money in our poorest families’ pockets by increasing the Scottish Child Payment?”
