Finnie urges protection for officers and staff who have raised concerns about Chief Constable

John Finnie MSP, Justice spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, today (10 Jan) urged Scottish Ministers to ensure protection for the police officers and staff who have raised concerns about Chief Constable Phil Gormley, who remains on special leave while allegations of gross misconduct are investigated.

Mr Finnie welcomed today's statement from the Justice Secretary clarifying recent events.

John said:

"The Justice Secretary was right to question whether the SPA had followed the correct procedure, and it clearly hadn't when it attempted to allow the Chief Constable to return to work.

"Complaints about alleged gross misconduct must be taken seriously and the brave individuals who came forward deserve assurances that their wellbeing will be protected.

"I welcome the fact that the Justice Secretary has discussed this issue with the new Chair of the SPA, and that the welfare of officers and staff will be a central consideration as investigations continue."
