FASLANE BLOCKADE WILL SEND STRONG MESSAGE: HARVIE

Scottish Greens including party co-convener Patrick Harvie MSP will today (13 April) take part in a blockade of the Faslane naval base, home to the Trident system of submarines which each carry 40 nuclear warheads with the capability to kill 5.4 million people.

The Scottish Greens, who are standing in 31 of Scotland’s 59 Westminster seats in May, want to see Trident scrapped, Nato membership rejected and military funding diverted to the real priorities of humanitarian work, disaster relief and peacekeeping.

Patrick Harvie, MSP for Glasgow, said:

"Trident is an obscenity. Through direct action and through the ballot box we can make the case for the UK to play a new role on the world stage.

"By pursuing peace, a global deal on climate change and ending the arms trade we can stand tall rather than clinging to outdated and dangerous status symbols. By choosing to disarm Trident we can reskill workers on the Clyde to provide defence of the strategically important northern seas, and diversify our economy for social good."
