Fair pay for Higher Education staff

Scottish Green MSPs today (25 May) expressed support for university staff taking industrial action across the country.

Members of the University & College Union (UCU) are staging a two-day walk out in protest at a pay offer of 1.1 per cent from employer body UCEA, which UCU has described as 'an insult'.

Ross Greer, Education spokesperson for the Scottish Greens and MSP for West of Scotland, said:

“High quality education is vital to creating a fairer Scotland, and the real terms pay cuts university lecturers have endured must be corrected if we’re to recruit and retain skilled and motivated staff. At the same time, we’ve seen pay for senior management go through the roof, so the anger many staff feel at such unequal treatment is understandable. Scottish Greens stand firmly with university staff and we urge the new Education Secretary to make clear where he stands.”
