End football ticket extortion with £25 cap

Football clubs urged to give fans the gift of a ticket price cap

The best gift this Christmas for football fans would be for Scottish clubs to back Scottish Green MSP Gillian Mackay’s campaign for a £25 away ticket price cap.

The party launched a campaign calling on clubs across Scotland to lower the price of away games for fans back in October, to make the sport more accessible and affordable for all.

Ticket price caps have been in effect in England for over a decade and means travelling fans do not pay more than £30 for a ticket. Europa and Champions League matches also see price caps. Yet, no such cap exists in Scotland.

It is time for Scottish clubs to follow suit and give fans more chances to follow their club across the country.

Gillian said:

“Football is one of the most loved and successful sports in our country. We have great teams and supporters, but it is often far too expensive for fans and their families to attend.

“That’s particularly true in the festive period when fixtures come thick and fast and people already have enough on their plates.

“Varying ticket prices and high transport costs are making it difficult for people to afford to follow their club. It pushes away future generations of supporters, who may otherwise have gone to matches with their parents or family.

“Price caps are common across England and Europe, and they should be a thing here in Scotland too. It would be a great gift to give to the fans who have followed their clubs through thick and thin, sometimes across the world.

“Football is for the fans, and I want to see our clubs across Scotland lead by example by making it more accessible and affordable for generations to come.”
