College strikes: Greens call for deal on fair pay

Ross Greer MSP, education spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, today urged college management to work with the trade unions on an agreement to ensure support staff receive fair pay.

Union members at 20 colleges across the country are on strike today after college bosses awarded lecturing staff a £450 rise compared with £230 offered to most support staff such as cleaners, administrators and technicians.

Ross Greer MSP said:

"Support staff in colleges play an essential role in a sector that has been at the receiving end of huge cuts and a costly reorganisation. Many of these workers are on below average wages and they deserve fair treatment.

"The frustration workers feel is understandable when we see college bosses enjoying bumper pay packets. Greens stand firmly with the support staff and urge Scottish Ministers to help resolve this dispute."
