College staff deserve support

The Scottish Greens have today called for support for further education lecturers. The Education Institute of Scotland (EIS) members voted yesterday to take strike action over pay disparities in the sector.

Nearly nine out of ten lecturers who took part in the ballot voted for strike action. EIS has been calling for a national pay bargaining process to ensure lecturers across Scotland's colleges are getting a fair deal.

Isla O'Reilly, Scottish Green Party spokesperson on Education and MSP candidate for Highlands and Islands, said:

“It has been clear for some time now that college staff have really struggled with the turmoil following mergers in the further education sector. The results of this vote should come as no surprise, and shows how little effort college management has made to respond to staff concerns.

“Lecturers are the backbone of Scotland’s colleges, and they deserve our support. I urge the Scottish Government to step in and make sure college management agrees to a fair national pay bargaining process.”
