BP profits: Fossil fuel giants dealing a devastating blow to people and planet

The destructive profiteering of oil and gas giants is delivering a devastating blow to people and planet, says Scottish Green Co-leader Patrick Harvie.
Patrick’s comments come as BP has published its profits for Q2 2025.
Only yesterday BP announced that they had made their largest oil and gas discovery for 25 years off the coast of Brazil.
Patrick said:
“Our climate cannot afford the kind of shameful planet-wrecking profiteering of fossil fuel giants like BP.
“Households and families across our country are suffering from eye-watering bills and an energy market that isn’t fit for purpose while the companies that are destroying our environment are raking it in.
“It is the sign of a broken system when some of the world’s biggest corporations are making such obscene profits while our world is burning.
“At a time when extreme weather is becoming more common and more severe, we badly need leaders who will stand up to the polluters and say that enough is enough.
“Labour has talked a good game on the climate, but they are taking us backwards, and the SNP is trying to be all things to all people while doing as little as they can get away with.
“They are squandering so much of our vast renewable potential while fossil fuel giants are dealing a devastating blow to people and planet.
“We badly need an end to new oil and gas exploration and a windfall tax worthy of the name so that we can raise vital funds for public investment in the green jobs that are critical for our economy and our future.”
Harvie added:
“The best way to protect ourselves against global oil and gas prices is to invest in the future that Scotland needs, a future of sustainable jobs in clean, green renewable energy, with as much as possible of it in public and community ownership. That is how to ensure proper energy security while creating cutting edge green jobs and lowering bills.
"We need to leave fossil fuels in the ground if we are to ensure a greener tomorrow and a liveable future for generations to come.”
