Salary: £39,400 full-time equivalent (£29,550 pro rata for 22.5 hours per week)

The Scottish Green Group operates a 30-hour, four-day full-time working week with no reduction in pay. This role is 22.5 hours per week (0.75 FTE). We welcome applications for job shares and will consider hybrid working arrangements.

Working for a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP)

MSPs are employers in their own right. This role will be jointly employed by three MSPs, Kayleigh Kinross-O’Neill MSP, Q Manivannan MSP and Kate Nevens MSP.  Line management will be provided by Kayleigh Kinross O’Neill on behalf of the group. Under their employment, you will become part of a team supporting them in carrying out their duties. You'll work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment to provide an outstanding service to the team and the constituents Kayleigh, Q and Kate represent.

Purpose of this role

To provide coordination and advisory support to the caseworkers working across the offices of Kayleigh Kinross-O’Neill MSP, Kate Nevens MSP and Q Manivannan MSP, representing the Edinburgh and Lothians East region.

Duties may include

  • Providing advice and coordination support to regional caseworkers and ensuring capacity to handle complex casework across the region:
    • Responding to and resolving complex and sensitive enquiries escalated to you by the MSP offices;
    • Providing advice and support to regional caseworkers as needed on individual cases, undertaking weekly one-to-one case reviews;
    • Supporting with the overall coordination of casework and policy enquiries across the three offices;
    • Helping establish internal coordination systems to support caseworkers with their workload;
    • Providing support at MSP surgeries as required.
  • Managing both routine and complex cases through to completion:
    • Responding to enquiries from constituents and stakeholders, including both routine and complex cases, including communications via email, letter, phone, online and in-person meetings;
    • Providing cover for other Caseworkers when they are absent and supporting MSP offices when they are experiencing a high influx of cases;
    • Advocating on constituents’ behalf with relevant bodies to resolve matters and liaising with officials and politicians from public bodies, local councils, Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government;
    • Drafting parliamentary questions, letters and other documents as necessary to support constituents.
  • Supporting the wider team with keeping casework systems and records up to date and ensuring compliance with GDPR:
    • Keeping cases up to date by tracking, logging and recognising when to escalate issues;
    • Compiling and maintaining policy resource files to use when advocating constituent cases;
    • Reviewing constituent records and documentation in line with casework GDPR requirements;
    • Working with other staff members in Edinburgh and Lothians East region to ensure that administrative, research and other tasks are undertaken across the group;
    • Maintaining records on current and previous casework and ensuring casework filing systems, both electronic and manual, are kept up to date in line with GDPR requirements.

Person specification

Essential

  • Previous experience of working as a caseworker or supporting individuals in a similar capacity, including experience of liaising with appropriate institutions and local agencies, and advocating on behalf of individuals
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Empathetic, patient and sensitive, with a natural interest in helping people
  • Have excellent written, verbal and IT skills with accurate attention to detail.
  • Experience of working with the public, working in a busy environment, working to deadlines and cooperating across a team
  • An understanding of the Scottish Parliament and the political climate of Scotland and Edinburgh & Lothians East
  • An ability to build and sustain positive working relationships across teams
  • A strong group ethos, and a willingness to share workload across the team when necessary
  • Ability to support Kate, Q & Kayleigh in delivering their parliamentary aims and values

Desirable

  • Experience of providing advisory and/or wellbeing support to colleagues
  • Understanding of a Trauma-Informed approach to supporting individuals
  • Experience of working in Parliament or local government
