Comms, Content and Campaign Officer for Patrick Harvie MSP and Iris Duane MSP

Salary: £36,524 to £40,000, depending on experience

Hours: Full time, 30 hours per week

Location: Regional office in Glasgow

Patrick Harvie MSP and Iris Duane MSP are recruiting for a number of roles both in their regional team, and in the Scottish Parliament.

From tackling the climate emergency to building a fairer economy and making the case for Scotland’s place in Europe, these priorities are central to the role. This is an exciting opportunity for people with experience of casework, policy, communications or campaigning, to work with one of our newest MSPs and one of our most experienced.

By default these posts are based either in the shared local office in Glasgow, or in Parliament, though working from home remains an option in particular circumstances. There may be occasional travel between Glasgow and Edinburgh. All these roles may involve periods of working alone, as well as with the rest of the team.

All these posts are full time, which is 30 hours per week in line with the 4-day week policy for staff across the Scottish Green’s Parliamentary Group. Applications for job share or other flexible arrangements will be considered.

This is a jointly employed post by both Patrick Harvie MSP and Iris Duane MSP.

PURPOSE

This post will support both Iris Duane and Patrick Harvie in their work, based primarily within the local team in Glasgow, but also supporting them in their Parliamentary responsibilities and co-ordinating with the Scottish Green’s Parliamentary Group.   

DUTIES MAY INCLUDE

  • Developing and implementing a regional media strategy, with an emphasis on social media and content creation
  • Producing media output with the MSPs, and managing social media accounts on their behalf
  • Drafting content for traditional media outlets, and supporting the MSPs in preparing for broadcast appearances
  • Monitoring relevant current affairs, local issues, and parliamentary business to identify priorities for comms and campaign work
  • Developing and maintaining contacts across the region
  • Coordinating regional campaigns, including media output, local events, and contributing to parliamentary activity such as motions, questions and debates
  • Attending local visits, meetings and other events, with or on behalf of the MSPs
  • Working with the wider comms team in the Scottish Green Parliamentary Group to ensure co-ordination and co-operation, including input to national priorities
  • Working with the wider team to identify and commission research work, as needed to support campaigns and communications
  • Working with the rest of the regional team on shared priorities, including occasional absence cover within the local office
  • Working closely with local office staff, volunteers and interns as required
  • Other reasonable and appropriate duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Degree or equivalent experience gained through work, volunteering, or other relevant roles.
  • experience in media, with an emphasis on social media and multi-platform content creation
  • experience in political, social or environmental campaigning
  • a proven track record of producing high quality work to short timescales

SKILLS

  • a strong understanding of Glasgow’s political landscape and local issues
  • ability to balance long term strategic planning with short term demands and changing circumstances
  • confidence in dealing with a wide range of contacts, including local and national government, campaign groups, NGOs, statutory services, media and political colleagues
  • excellent communication and writing skills
  • strong organisational and IT skills

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Self-motivated, with an ability to work on your own
  • A strong group ethos, and a willingness to share workload across the team when necessary
  • A strong sense of the opportunities which MSPs have to engage with local issues and community concerns
  • Creative and versatile
  • Sensitive to the needs and concerns of constituents and campaign groups
  • Ability to support Iris and Patrick in delivering their parliamentary aims and values
