Tell the Planning Minister to save Park of Keir

Park of Keir is the jewel in the crown of our greenbelt that stretches from Dunblane to Bridge of Allan.

The beautiful rolling landscape is much valued by local communities and is home to native woodland, it’s completely unsuited for development.

Yet three years ago the Planning Minister Kevin Stewart overturned Stirling Council’s decision to reject the planning application for an enormous development at Park of Keir. Since then, councillors and developers have been in protracted negotiations behind closed doors, with more than a dozen deadlines for talks to conclude having come and gone. If this enormous development does go ahead it will destroy the area.

Dear Kevin Stewart MSP, Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning

As we approach the third anniversary of your decision to overturn the Reporter’s recommendation to reject the planning application at Park of Keir, I am writing to ask you to take this opportunity to finally reject the proposal and save this treasured landscape from development.

The developers have repeatedly failed to meet the conditions you set out in 2017 and since then more than a dozen extensions have been set, and subsequently missed.

As the reporter noted, this development will erode the openness of the green belt and would have an adverse effect on the landscape character. The landscape of Park of Keir includes native woodland and is a precious part of the green belt between Dunblane and Bridge of Allan. The reporter also concluded that the development is likely to be predominantly dependent on private cars for access and would not be easily accessible by public transport, walking or cycling. The environmental damage this proposal will do is therefore obvious.

When giving your notice of intention to approve the development subject to conditions the decision was based on supposed national economic benefits. In the intervening years it has become increasingly clear that these benefits are unlikely to manifest, especially in the post COVID-19 climate. The financial viability of the project has been suspect for some time now and the developers have consistently failed to provide satisfactory answers to serious questions on the matter. It is simply unclear how the supposed national economic benefits are to be delivered.

The community surrounding the area has been consistent and vocal in its opposition to the project and Stirling Council resources have been wasted for years.

I ask you to please bring this to an end, eliminate the uncertainty and throw out the Park of Keir development proposal.
