NL Greens look back and look forward

As we get past our AGM it's time to reflect on another year in the life of the NL Greens. Despite the very eventful year that it has been in terms of Brexit and local issues,  for once there wasn't an election for us to be fighting. That means there hasn't been quite as many nights of leafleting in the rain and snow, and a bit of a physical rest for some of our hard working volunteers.

North Lanarkshire is an uncomfortable position in terms of its Local Plan and developers exploit loopholes to push through inappropriate development.  Local Greens have been working hard, organising meetings and workshops and assisting with local grassroots campaigns to highlight the uneven playing field faced by communities.

Working families in North Lanarkshire continue to be hit by the westminster austerity agenda, pushing more children into poverty.  Recent changes in the Tax Credits system and the introduction of Universal Credit have seen many families with both parents in employment forced to use food banks, apply for crisis loans and additional payments in order to feed their families and heat their homes.

Whilst council standards for their own properties rise to meet the requirements for climate change and reduction in fuel poverty, new build housing falls way below the minimum decent build standard for homes.  The UK has the least energy efficient housing in Europe, and in a recent report on climate change Lord Deben actively criticised major house builder Persimmon homes for skimping on quality to boost it’s profits.

Green MSP John Finnie recently joined local candidate Kevin Hamilton on the campaign trail ahead of the council elections on 4th May.

Hamilton, who will contest the Cumbernauld North ward for the party, is one of nine Green candidates in North Lanarkshire. This is the first time Greens have fielded candidates at a full council election in North Lanarkshire.

Every voter in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth will have the opportunity to vote Green, with the party fielding a candidate in each of the four wards in the area.
