First Minister statement: Scotland still wants say over Brexit say Greens

Tue 27 Jun, 2017

The people of Scotland will be the only ones in Europe not to have a say on Brexit under the new timetable outlined by the First Minister, say the Scottish Greens.

Responding to a statement by Nicola Sturgeon, where the First Minister revealed that she will “not seek” to introduce immediate legislation for an independence referendum, Scottish Greens’ co-convener Patrick Harvie said there is now “no chance” that Scotland will avoid being dragged out of the EU and, likely the Single Market.

The people of Scotland must be given a choice over their future

Tue 27 Jun, 2017

The co-conveners of the Scottish Green Party have today (27 June) written to the First Minister, urging her to resist calls from opponents who have conceded to a Hard Brexit and who are against holding an independence referendum once the terms of the deal are known.

Ahead of an expected announcement from Nicola Sturgeon this week, Maggie Chapman and Patrick Harvie MSP argue that there is nothing to change the argument in favour of Scotland’s future being decided by the people who live here, on the timescale previously set out.

We must do all we can to offset the malignity of the Tories and DUP

Patrick Harvie MSP Fri 16 Jun, 2017

“May I say just one more thing Prime Minister; if you must do this damn silly thing, don’t do it in this damn silly way.”

So spoke the fictional, and now almost legendary civil servant Sir Humphrey Appleby in perhaps his bluntest ever advice in an episode of Yes, Prime Minister. It’s a warning which has been coming to mind a lot recently, and it could have been made specifically about the disastrous decision to take the UK out of the European Union, and the damn silly way in which it’s being done.

UK election is whim of dangerous hard-right party

Tue 18 Apr, 2017

The Scottish Greens say today's announcement by the Prime Minister of her intention to press for a UK General Election on 8 June shows that Scotland continues to suffer at the hands of a hard right Tory party.

Co-convener Patrick Harvie MSP said:

"Brexit is a mess of the Tory party's making, and they are calling this election for much the same self-serving reasons as the EU referendum itself. Since June they have also consistently ignored voters in Scotland and elsewhere who chose to stay in Europe and the single market.

50 politicians from across Europe have responded to Theresa May’s triggering of Article 50 by signing a letter claiming that an independent Scotland will be “most welcome as a full member of the European Union”.
