We must do all we can to offset the malignity of the Tories and DUP

Patrick Harvie MSP Fri 16 Jun

“May I say just one more thing Prime Minister; if you must do this damn silly thing, don’t do it in this damn silly way.”

So spoke the fictional, and now almost legendary civil servant Sir Humphrey Appleby in perhaps his bluntest ever advice in an episode of Yes, Prime Minister. It’s a warning which has been coming to mind a lot recently, and it could have been made specifically about the disastrous decision to take the UK out of the European Union, and the damn silly way in which it’s being done.

UK election is whim of dangerous hard-right party

18 April, 2017 - 12:43

The Scottish Greens say today's announcement by the Prime Minister of her intention to press for a UK General Election on 8 June shows that Scotland continues to suffer at the hands of a hard right Tory party.

Co-convener Patrick Harvie MSP said:

"Brexit is a mess of the Tory party's making, and they are calling this election for much the same self-serving reasons as the EU referendum itself. Since June they have also consistently ignored voters in Scotland and elsewhere who chose to stay in Europe and the single market.

50 politicians from across Europe say independent Scotland welcome as full member of EU

9 April, 2017 - 10:19

50 politicians from across Europe have responded to Theresa May’s triggering of Article 50 by signing a letter claiming that an independent Scotland will be “most welcome as a full member of the European Union”.

Harvie raises Westminster power grab concerns at First Minister's Questions

30 March, 2017 - 13:12

Green co-convener Patrick Harvie today used First Minister’s Questions to raise concerns about the UK government’s failure to “entrench” the permanence of the Scottish Parliament and its intention to “hoard” powers repatriated from Brussels.

The Glasgow MSP reminded the chamber that the Scottish people voted in favour of a Scottish Parliament, by 74%, in 1997 and urged the First Minister to ensure that the Westminster government does not “bypass” Holyrood in relevant sections of the Repeal Bill.

Triggering of Article 50 "economic and social vandalism"

29 March, 2017 - 14:13

Ross Greer MSP, External Affairs spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, today (29 March) described the triggering of Article 50 by the Prime Minister as "economic and social vandalism" and “signalling the end of the UK”.

Yesterday, the Scottish Parliament agreed a Green amendment that a fresh referendum on independence is needed once the Brexit deal is known and before the UK has left the EU, and that the franchise should include sixteen and seventeen year olds and EU citizens living in Scotland.
