The Scottish Government have announced their plan to keep the Council Tax and make only minor adjustments, despite over half of properties being in the wrong band and no revaluation since 1991. The Council Tax is regressive, it should be scrapped & replaced with a progressive system of local taxation based on wealth.

Other opposition parties at Holyrood ignoring need for sustainable jobs

Patrick Harvie MSP, Economy spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, today (14 June) accused the other opposition parties at Holyrood of ignoring the need to invest in sustainable jobs, as they attempted to turn a debate on the economy into one on the constitution.

The Green amendment to the government's motion highlighted the Scottish economy's over-dependence on oil and gas, the need for well-paid work in low-carbon industries and redistribution of wealth.

The other opposition parties' amendments talked about independence.

The First Minister came under fire at Holyrood today after government plans for an aviation tax cut were slammed by the Greens.

Patrick Harvie MSP cited fresh research, produced by the party, showing that the richest 10% of households stand to gain four times as much from Nicola Sturgeon’s plans for a 50% cut to Air Passenger Duty than the poorest 10%.

New figures produced today (25 April) by the Scottish Greens show that the richest 10% of households stand to gain four times as much from the 50% cut to APD than the poorest 10%.

The Green group of MSPs, who were elected on a manifesto commitment to retain Air Passenger Duty, will abstain in today’s Holyrood vote allowing the Air Departure Tax (Scotland) Bill to proceed to the amendment stage, so they can attempt a major overhaul with alternative tax proposals that have “social, environmental and genuine economic benefits”. 

Green Investment Bank sale to fracking funder criticised by Greens

The decision to sell the Green Investment Bank to a company that has invested billions of pounds in fossil fuel projects has been criticised by a Green MSP.

Australian bank Macquarie has a history of investing in fracking and opencast coal mining projects and Green MSP Andy Wightman says that GIB’s environmental credentials are “now in tatters”.
