The Scottish Government have announced their plan to keep the Council Tax and make only minor adjustments, despite over half of properties being in the wrong band and no revaluation since 1991. The Council Tax is regressive, it should be scrapped & replaced with a progressive system of local taxation based on wealth.

We must do more to mitigate the effects of the benefit cap

Alison Johnstone MSP Fri 1 Sep, 2017

The schools are back and a new session of Parliament beckons. While most people will have had a break with family and friends, summer isn't such an enjoyable time for all. Many families face the extra cost of meals and activities which would usually be provided at school.

Last July and August, Trussell Trust UK provided 4,412 more three-day emergency food parcels for children than during the previous two months. 27% of these went to children younger than 4, including newborns, and I fear that we will see similar numbers this year.

Holyrood and Westminster will start their business again at the start of September. Not before time.

Wed 23 Aug, 2017

Commenting on today's GERS (Government Expenditure and Revenue Scotland) figures, Patrick Harvie MSP, Finance & Economy spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, said:

"Every year these figures set off a tiresome war of words between those who think Scotland could never run its own affairs and those who think the SNP approach is flawless. What these figures really show is that Scotland needs to build a clean economy that does not rely on oil and gas.

Non-domestic rates report lacks real reforms say Greens

Tue 22 Aug, 2017

Aspects of a report published today on non-domestic business rates deserve recognition, but disappointingly leave out proposals for real reforms say the Scottish Greens.

The Barclay Report on Business Rates, according to the party, lacks recommendations to see NDR transformed into a “land value tax” or for councils to determine how rates are set.

Patrick Harvie MSP, the Scottish Greens’ finance spokesperson, said:
