MSP Backs a Living Wage in West Dunbartonshire
As last year’s Living Wage Week (5-11 November) was celebrated, Green MSP, Ross Greer, spent time with a Living Wage employer in Clydebank to praise the work that they do.
Ross visited Carers of West Dunbartonshire, who provide advice and practical support to over a thousand people each year throughout the West Dunbartonshire area. They are one of over 1300 Living Wage accredited employers in Scotland, which means that they pay all of their staff a wage to meets the cost of living, which is higher than the national minimum wage.
On Monday 5th November 2018 it was confirmed that the new UK living wage (outside London) has been calculated at £9.00 per hour.
Ross Greer, Green MSP for the West of Scotland, is himself accredited as a Living Wage employer, and commented:
“It was great to meet the staff at Carers of West Dunbartonshire, to hear about the fantastic work they’re doing to help carers out in so many ways, from respite to emotional support, to advocacy and money advice needs and so much more. Their work on challenging issues like addiction issues amongst those with caring responsibilities was particularly inspiring.
“They know more than most that in-work poverty is a disgrace and nobody who works full time or in multiple jobs should struggle to make ends meet. That’s why all employers should be paying a living wage. I’m happy to set that example myself and was delighted to see such a brilliant example of it at Carers of West Dunbartonshire.”
