Freeports are a failed and dated Tory gimmick

Fri 13 Jan, 2023

Freeports are a failed and dated Tory gimmick that will only benefit the super-rich and major corporations, say the Scottish Greens.

This comes as the UK and Scottish Governments have announced that two new so-called green freeports will be established in Scotland.

Freeports are an excluded area in the cooperation agreement between the Scottish Greens and Scottish Government. This announcement does not affect the agreement.

The Scottish Greens finance spokesperson, Ross Greer MSP said:

UK government must stop dragging us towards environmental disaster

Fri 13 Jan, 2023

The Scottish Greens are challenging the UK government to wake up to the reality of the climate crisis and reverse course on fossil fuels, rather than dragging us towards environmental disaster.

The calls come just days after the publication of the Scottish Government’s draft Energy Strategy and Just Transition plan.

The plan, published on Tuesday, calls for a halt to new oil and gas exploration licences and outlines plans for Scotland to lead a just transition to renewables.

Helping former addicts enhance their life skills has to form a central plank of future drugs recovery plans, say the Scottish Greens.

Party health spokesperson Gillian Mackay has met people who say their recovery would be enhanced by skills development help, and urged the Scottish Government to do all it could to help during a debate in Parliament today. She said:

Time for Caledonian Sleeper to be brought into public ownership

Thu 12 Jan, 2023

The Caledonian Sleeper service should run in the public interest and closely integrated with European national rail services, say the Scottish Greens, who have called for the service to be brought into public hands.

Scottish Greens transport spokesperson, Mark Ruskell MSP, during a debate in the Scottish Parliament called for an affordable sleeper service “that is fully integrated and operated in the national interest, and run by a public company.”

Mark Ruskell MSP said:

Climate emergency will be at the heart of national planning

The Scottish Greens have welcomed the Scottish Parliament’s approval of the fourth National Planning Framework. The Framework, which was formally passed today in Parliament, is the first to put the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis at the heart of planning.

It lays out the policies which local councils must use to decide future planning applications up to 2045, including where to site new housing, schools, roads and industrial facilities.

All fire stations must have the necessary decontamination equipment for firefighters, according to Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman.

Maggie raised the issue this afternoon in a Portfolio Question to Elena Whitham, the Minister for Community Safety.

In her answer, the Minister said that the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service puts a high priority on improving equipment and facilities to reduce exposure to contaminants. She also committed to working with the Fire Brigade Union on the issue.

Independent Scotland could be a beacon for workers rights and environmental justice

Tue 10 Jan, 2023

With the powers of a normal independent country, Scotland can be a beacon for workers rights and environmental justice, say the Scottish Greens. The comments come as the Scottish Parliament debates Scotland’s right to choose its own future.

In today’s debate Ross Greer MSP will say:

End of support for fossil fuel era in Scotland ‘a generational tipping point’

Tue 10 Jan, 2023

Proposals by the Scottish Government to oppose new onshore oil, gas and coal, and to adopt a presumption against any new oil and gas exploration in the North Sea, represents a "generational tipping point" in favour of clean, renewable energy, say the Scottish Greens.

The Scottish Government Energy Strategy and Just Transition plan reflects long argued Scottish Green policy for an end to fossil fuels in the face of worsening climate crisis.
