Research using the airline industry’s own data shows, cutting aviation tax is a tax cut for the wealthy.

The Scottish Parliament now has the power to set aviation tax. The SNP government propose to cut it. Their plans will leave Scotland with £700 million less for public services and irrevocably damage the environment.

We believe cutting Air Departure Tax is wrong. Research using the industry’s own data shows, it is a tax cut for the wealthy. It will not help families go on holiday. And it will leave the environmentally-damaging aviation industry effectively untaxed.

Patrick Harvie MSP, Co-Convenor of the Scottish Greens, today (14 Dec) welcomed Scottish Government plans to create new rates and bands of Income Tax, saying it shows Green pressure is helping deliver a fairer Scotland.

The Greens also say their pressure on public sector pay has led to the proposed rise of 3 per cent for workers earning up to £30,000.

But Mr Harvie warned that the draft budget fails the Greens' test on protecting council services, as ministers are proposing a real-terms cut in the local government resource budget.

Ahead of this week's statement (Thu 14 Dec) from the Scottish Government on its proposed tax and spending plans for 2018-19, Green MSPs are warning ministers that they cannot support a budget that cuts funding to local council services such as education, social care, transport and leisure.
 
During last year's budget process, the Green MSPs succeeded in getting SNP ministers to cancel proposed cuts of £160million to local councils, and they made clear that they expected ministers to go further in future and begin to repair the damage done by previous years' cuts.
