Andy Wightman MSP Mon 20 Nov, 2017

Open Letter to parents of pupils at George Watson’s College

Dear Parent,

The Principal of George Watson’s College issued a statement and comments to the media last week in response to a speech I made in the Scottish Parliament. The comments are misleading and convey an erroneous impression of both what I said and why I said it. I hope that the following notes set the record straight.

The Future of Scotland's Centres of Excellence

Andy Wightman MSP Tue 7 Nov, 2017

I am delighted that the Council's proposals to close the City of Edinburgh Music School have been thrown out at this morning's meeting of the Finance and Resources Committee. Congratulatiosn to everyone involved in the campaign to save one of Scotland's outstanding Centres of Excellence.

However, the fact that the Council saw fit to bring this proposal in the first place suggests to me that the Scottish Government should do more to make very clear the basis upon which funding is provided to Councils to support the Centres of Excellence network.

Closure of the Edinburgh City Music School

Andy Wightman MSP Fri 27 Oct, 2017

Proposals have emerged this week to close the national centre of excellence in music at the City of Edinburgh Music School (CEMS). CEMS is one of four national centres of excellence (the others are at Plockton, Dyce and Douglas Academy in Milngavie).

These National Centres of excellence cater for pupils across Scotland and indeed across Europe. They are funded by Scottish Government funding voted by the Scottish Parliament.

Housing Debate 13/9/17

Andy Wightman MSP Thu 14 Sep, 2017

“The current housing system is broken. We need a new approach to new build, to building maintenance, to accelerating energy efficiency measures, to creating more nuanced use classes for domestic property, to reform housing taxation and to homelessness.”

Yesterday Andy spoke in the Housing debate below is a link to the Official Report.

FOI Debate

Andy Wightman MSP Wed 14 Jun, 2017

Yesterday Andy spoke in Neil Findlay's Member's Business debate on FOI.

Andy said 'The FOI regime needs serious scrutiny. It has performed well, as have the two commissioners to date, but the performance of some public authorities leaves much to be desired. The Scottish Government, in particular, has questions to answer. The public are entitled to answers to the questions that were raised by the journalists, and I hope that ministers will provide them soon'

On the 27th of April Andy spoke in the Members' debate on the current Edinburgh Airport flight path consultation.

Although speaking time in the deabte was short and MSPs were only able to deal with high level issues the concerns raised by residents from the Lothians and Fife were represented by all those who spoke.
