The Paris Agreement, signed by countries at UN talks six years ago, commits countries to keeping temperature rises to well below 2C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit them to 1.5C.

But despite issuing warnings to other countries, the UK Government remains committed to a policy programme which will only increase emissions. This includes massive expansions of fossil fuel extraction, aviation and road building with very little commitments in the way of restoring the natural environment which stores carbon and ensures species survival.

In his budget a week before COP, the Chancellor announced £21 billion on roads while cutting air passenger duty for domestic flights and a fuel duty freeze. This is a dereliction of climate duties and embarrassing from the COP hosts.

Warm words won’t keep the planet cool. We need action, and you can remind the COP 26 president Alok Sharma of his responsibilities to lead by example and ensure the conversation at COP delivers global commitments to secure our survival.
